foot-arch-acheArch pain in the foot, which is also called arch strain, is a reference to inflammation occurring along the arch of the foot. Aside from pain, the condition can also present as a highly uncomfortable burning sensation.

Causes
Arch pain can have several different causes. In some cases, there has been an injury to the foot that causes the discomfort. In others, there is an imbalance in the structure of the foot that leads to the condition. Most frequently, the cause is plantar fasciitis, which is an aggravation of the fibrous tissue, called the plantar fascia, that extends from the forefoot to the heel. This tissue becomes excessively stretched due to flat feet or other problems. The inflammation that results from plantar fasciitis leads to arch and heel pain. The pain is often the most severe when the person wakes up in the morning or after an extended rest period. When the condition is not treated promptly, the continued strain on the arch may cause a heel spur to to develop. Arch pain should always be evaluated and treated as soon as possible.

Treatment
Pain in the arches is a common issue and may be treatable by simply changing footwear. Those who have chronic arch pain should avoid shoes with high heels and opt for low-heel shoes with soft uppers and shock absorption. Using foot insoles can be helpful as well. Those with flat feet will require a specially designed orthotic with the correct arch support and a medial heel post. This will stop the overstretching and provide pain relief from plantar fasciitis. In extreme cases, a surgical procedure may need to be performed.

While arch pain is common, it often does not resolve on its own. Anyone experiencing chronic foot discomfort should contact a podiatrist for professional evaluation and treatment. Contact the friendly staff at InMotion Foot & Ankle Specialists for questions or to setup an appointment.
